Hello, I am Sophie
I am a project manager, a parent, and an expat living in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Several years ago I moved here with my family. What began as a short-term assignment gradually became a new chapter of life abroad.
How It Started
Moving to Netherlands wasn’t in our long-range plan. Like many international moves, it started as a job opportunity and soon grew into something far more significant.
The early months were challenging — unfamiliar processes, new routines, lofty expectations. Daily tasks seemed more complicated than they ought to be.
The Adjustment Period
There was culture shock, doubt, and plenty of hands-on learning. Yet gradually, routines took shape. We found spots that suited us, connected with other families, and began constructing something that felt stable.
Why I Built StillOakCandle
Most information online fell into either corporate relocation guidance or superficial tourism content. What was missing was a candid, everyday family viewpoint.
This site aims to fill that gap — practical guidance drawn from real life in Netherlands.
What This Site Does and Does Not
This site is:
- Hands-on experience from living in Netherlands
- Centered on family life and daily realities
- Updated when there is a real change
This site isn't:
- Not a tourism authority resource
- Not a sponsored review platform
- Not a generic travel blog
Looking Ahead
Our time in Netherlands continues, and so does the learning journey. As long as the information remains useful, I’ll continue documenting what we learn.
If you have questions about family life in Amsterdam or anywhere in Netherlands, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Best regards,
Sophie
